800 years of St. Francis of Assisi

800 years of St. Francis of Assisi's “Canticle of the Creatures” – A song of brotherhood

In 2025, we celebrate a special anniversary: the famous “Canticle of the Creatures” by St. Francis of Assisi will be 800 years old. This poetic praise of God is one of the oldest texts in Italian literature and is also an impressive testimony to Franciscan spirituality. At the heart of the Canticle of the Creatures is the deep connection between all creatures. Francis speaks of “Brother Sun,” “Sister Moon,” and “Mother Earth”—a language that understands the world as a great community in which everything is interconnected. In the current issue of the German "Green Series", the authors show how the message of the Canticle of the Creatures can still be powerful today: as inspiration for brotherly and sisterly coexistence, for a mindful approach to creation, and for a spirituality that connects people, creation, and God.
